  • incidence of primary infection of pregnant mothers is 1 - 6 per 1000 in the UK
  • risk of vertical transmission is less than 33%
  • incidence of symptomatic disease is about 1 in 10,000

  • risk of damage is greater the earlier on in pregnancy that the infection occurs
