- incidence of primary infection of pregnant mothers is 1 - 6 per 1000 in the UK
- risk of vertical transmission is less than 33%
- incidence of symptomatic disease is about 1 in 10,000
- the incidence is increased by HIV infection and in countries where raw meat is eaten
- risk of damage is greater the earlier on in pregnancy that the infection occurs
