Causes to consider include:

  • infection
    • vulvovaginal candidiasis
    • dermaphytosis
    • parasites
      • scabies (especially Sarcoptes scabiei hominis)
      • phthirus pubis
      • anal helminth infections (Oxyuris vermicularissyn.Enterobius vermicularis
    • predisposition for mycoses due to diabetes mellitus,liver diseases, immunosuppression
  • other causes
    • regrowth of pubic hair after shaving
    • psychogenic causes and sexual disorders
    • malignancies
  • non-infectious or inflammatory disease of the vulvar
    • lichen sclerosus
    • mucosal lichen planus
    • lichen simplex chronicus
    • contact dermatitis
    • psoriasis
