- infection
- vulvovaginal candidiasis
- dermaphytosis
- parasites
- scabies (especially Sarcoptes scabiei hominis)
- phthirus pubis
- anal helminth infections (Oxyuris vermicularissyn.Enterobius vermicularis
- predisposition for mycoses due to diabetes mellitus,liver diseases, immunosuppression
- other causes
- regrowth of pubic hair after shaving
- psychogenic causes and sexual disorders
- malignancies
- non-infectious or inflammatory disease of the vulvar
- lichen sclerosus
- mucosal lichen planus
- lichen simplex chronicus
- contact dermatitis
- psoriasis
