Possible complications of puerperal infection include:
- formation of a pelvic abscess
- pelvic thrombophlebitis
- paralytic ileus
- disseminated intravascular coagulation
- septic shock
- subsequent infertility
- salpingitis, pelvic cellulitis and pelvic peritonitis - very rarely seen today because of early administration of antibiotics.
