The differential diagnosis of acute cholecystitis is:

  • gastric and duodenal ulcer
  • hepatitis - viral or drug-related
  • acute pancreatitis:
    • tenderness usually more widespread
    • can occur concurrently with cholecystitis
    • confirmed with serum amylase
  • gallbladder cancer
  • hepatic abscess
  • Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome
  • right lower lobar pneumonia
  • angina pectoris/myocardial infarction (1)
  • inflamed hepatic flexure carcinoma
  • diverticular disease of hepatic flexure
  • perforation of duodenal ulcer (1)
