supplements and calories in malnutrition

The following supplements should be given:-

  • vitamins A, B, C and D
  • minerals: magnesium, zinc, copper and selenium
  • folic acid
  • iron is given when the appetite is restored

Calories are given as follows:

  • the route depends upon the child - able to suckle or requiring nasogastric feeding
  • 110 kilocalories per kilogram should be given per day. This usually fulfills the fluid requirements also, if given in a compound such as Enfamil.
  • half strength feeds are given in the 48 hours if there is diarrhoea
