supplements and calories in malnutrition

The following supplements should be given:-
- vitamins A, B, C and D
- minerals: magnesium, zinc, copper and selenium
- folic acid
- iron is given when the appetite is restored
Calories are given as follows:
- the route depends upon the child - able to suckle or requiring nasogastric feeding
- 110 kilocalories per kilogram should be given per day. This usually fulfills the fluid requirements also, if given in a compound such as Enfamil.
- half strength feeds are given in the 48 hours if there is diarrhoea
