The clinical effects of sagittal sinus thrombosis depend upon the site of the lesion:

  • anterior occlusion is usually asymptomatic
  • posterior occlusion:
    • paraplegia due to infarction of the upper part of the cerebral hemispheres, or alternatively, hemiplegia
    • seizures, e.g. Jacksonian epilepsy
    • raised intracranial pressure with headache, vomiting, and papilloedema
    • congestion of scalp veins
    • invariably, papilloedema
