The clinical effects of sagittal sinus thrombosis depend upon the site of the lesion:
- anterior occlusion is usually asymptomatic
- posterior occlusion:
- paraplegia due to infarction of the upper part of the cerebral hemispheres, or alternatively, hemiplegia
- seizures, e.g. Jacksonian epilepsy
- raised intracranial pressure with headache, vomiting, and papilloedema
- congestion of scalp veins
- invariably, papilloedema
