The causes of acute interstitial nephritis include:

  • idiopathic

  • obstructive nephropathy

  • drug hypersensitivity:
    • all antibiotics, especially:
      • penicillins
      • cephalosporins
      • sulphonamides
      • aminoglycosides
    • all diuretics
  • all non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

  • infection:
    • pyogenic
    • leptospirosis
    • brucella
    • Hante virus haemorrhagic fever

  • inflammatory/immunological:
    • SLE
    • Sjogren's syndrome
    • sarcoid
    • vasculitis

  • malignant disease:
    • myeloma kidney

  • metabolic:
    • hypercalcaemia
    • hypokalaemia
    • urate nephropathy
