Decision to treat is based on a number of factors, including:
- haematocrit - most thresholds are at around 70%
- clinical manifestations of polycythaemia - ie hyperviscosity syndrome
- clinical condition of the infant
The criteria vary from unit to unit.
The treatment of choice is a partial exchange transfusion.
