  • incidence is estimated at 9000 - 10,000 per annum in England and Wales

  • squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is rare in patients under 60 years of age unless immunosuppressed

  • commonest locations for SCCs:
    • both sexes - back of hands, face
    • men - scalp and ears
    • women - lower legs

  • risk factors
    • lifetime excessive sun exposure
    • multiple actinic keratoses
    • poor tanning ability
    • fair skin
    • transplant recipients
