In examination of these patients it is critical to find any focal disease. Thus, the examination should reveal any:

  • skin lesions
  • joint/bone problems
  • lymphadenopathy
  • organomegaly
  • tenderness
  • chest infection
  • cardiac murmurs
  • inflamed genitoperineal regions
  • confusion, focal signs, meningism

Signs are often absent or subtle.

In addition, a general survey must be made to establish the patient's general constitution: nutritional status, oedema, jaundice, anaemia, etc.
