Investigations demonstrate the following:
- hypoproteinaemia - the albumin is below 20
- hypogammaglobulinaemia
- low circulating lymphocytes
Confirmation of the diagnosis is by demonstrating excess loss of chromium 51 labelled albumin in the stool.
If a jejunal biopsy is taken there are dilated villi.
