Features on investigation include:
- normal or slightly raised creatinine kinase
- abnormal motor neurone studies - which distinguishes this condition from muscular dystrophies
- electromyography, which shows fibrillation potentials, and features of denervated muscle
- muscle biopsy may reveal neurogenic atrophy
