liver disease and coagulation factors

- coagulation factors produced in the liver:
- factors I (fibrinogen), II (thrombin), V, VII, IX and X
- factor VII is the first factor to be reduced in liver disease. This is followed by reduction of factors II and X.
- biliary tract obstruction results in reduced levels of vitamin K absorption and thus decreased synthesis of factors II, VII, IX and X
- in severe liver disease levels of factor V may be reduced
- fibrinogen functional abnormalities are seen in patients with liver disease
