liver disease and coagulation factors

Last reviewed 01/2018

  • coagulation factors produced in the liver:
    • factors I (fibrinogen), II (thrombin), V, VII, IX and X
  • factor VII is the first factor to be reduced in liver disease. This is followed by reduction of factors II and X.
  • biliary tract obstruction results in reduced levels of vitamin K absorption and thus decreased synthesis of factors II, VII, IX and X
  • in severe liver disease levels of factor V may be reduced
  • fibrinogen functional abnormalities are seen in patients with liver disease
