If there are thought to be potential underlying causes for the constipation, the following investigations may be helpful:
- abdominal radiology, which should show the loaded rectum
- barium enema or rectal biopsy, to look for Hirschprung's disease
- if an endocrine cause is possible, the appropriate blood tests may be helpful
Test for coeliac disease and hypothyroidism in the ongoing management of intractable constipation in children and young people if requested by specialist services (1)
