Interactions of tacrine include:

  • it may block the action of anticholinergic agents
  • action of cholinomimetics may be increased
  • blood concentrations of tacrine may be increased by concurrent use of cimetidine
  • blood concentrations may be reduced by smoking
  • there may be an increased risk of bleeding in patients receiving non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents
  • tacrine has been reported to increase serum concentrations of theophylline and thus theophylline levels should be monitored when using tacrine and theophylline together
