non-sedative antihistamines

Last reviewed 01/2018

Non-sedative antihistamines are a more recent development than their sedative counterpart. Their reduced ability to suppress consciousness is by virtue of reduced crossing of the blood-brain barrier. In these preparations sedation is rare but can occur, so the patient must be issued with the standard warnings about driving and using machinery, especially in conjunction with alcohol intake.

Types of non-sedative antihistamine include:

  • acrivastine
  • cetirizine
  • loratadine
  • mizolastine
