central causes

The central causes of autonomic failure include:

  • neurodegenerative:
    • autonomic failure with multiple system atrophy
    • autonomic failure with Parkinson's disease
    • "pure" progressive autonomic failure

  • secondary causes:
    • tumours e.g. craniopharyngioma damaging the hypothalamus
    • infection:
      • tabes dorsalis
      • Chagas' disease
    • spinal cord lesions
