jaundice in pregnancy

This occurs in approximately 1 in 1500 pregnancies.

Causes include:

  • jaundice caused by pregnancy:
    • intrahepatic cholestasis (20%)
    • jaundice in pre-eclampsia
    • acute fatty degeneration of the liver

  • intercurrent jaundice in pregnancy
    • viral hepatitis (40%)
    • cholelithiasis (6%)
    • haemolysis
    • drugs
