Causes include:

  • severe refractive errors e.g. amblyopia.
  • ocular pathology.
    • ocular malformations e.g. coloboma, no eye, no iris.
    • corneal opacities.
    • cataracts.
    • glaucoma.
    • retinal pathology e.g. retinitis pigmentosa, retinoblastoma.
    • ocular trauma.
  • pathology affecting the optic nerve and tract e.g. pituitary tumour, glioma.
  • cortical blindness.
