  • corticosteroids - suppress osteoblasts, reduce calcium absorption, increase calcium excretion, stimulate PTH secretion
  • chronic heparin administration
  • cytotoxic therapy
  • thyroxine
  • frusemide
  • alcohol
  • caffeine

The association between ethanol and osteoporosis is probably multifactorial. Alcoholics are more likely to have a higher degree of malnutrition and a greater tendency to fall and fracture.
