In 85-90% of patients, the patent ductus arteriosus is the only defect.

In the remainder there can be:

  • ventricular septal defect
  • coarctation
  • pulmonary or aortic stenosis

In heart disease which restricts pulmonary blood flow, the patency of the ductus is essential for life. Such conditions include:

  • pulmonary valve atresia
  • transposition of the great arteries
