Diseases caused by pneumococci include:
- community acquired pneumonia - the most common cause
- acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, sinusitis, otitis media, and conjunctivitis
- meningitis - especially in skull fracture from sinuses, etc.
- septicaemia and "occult bacteraemia" - in febrile children and endocarditis
- septic arthritis
