It is important to think of congenital hiatus hernia in this condition.
Other conditions which should be considered in an infant or in a child with symptoms of silent or visible regurgitation or vomiting are:

- pyloric stenosis – presents with nonbilious projectile vomiting
- malrotation
- cow's milk allergy
- infection
- urinary tract infections
- viral gastroenteritis
- metabolic disorders
- renal tubular acidosis
- urea cycle defects
- hypocalcemia
- neurological causes
- hydrocephalus
- meningitis
- other causes
- drugs/toxins (1)
