Q and non-Q wave myocardial infarction

Last reviewed 01/2018

The short term and long-term prognosis varies with respect to Q and non-Q wave myocardial infarctions (MIs).

Q wave MI ('full thickness') Vs. non-Q wave MI ('sub-endocardial')

  • short-term mortality 17.1% (Q wave MI); 9.2% (non-Q wave MI)
  • long-term mortality 21.3% (Q wave MI); 28.5% (non-Q wave MI)
  • re-infarction 6.2% (Q wave MI); 17.5% (non-Q wave MI)

Q wave infarcts occur in about 70% of cases of MIs.
