This section is a short introduction to the methods used in clinical medical research. The different types of studies are described and their strengths and weaknesses compared. The common errors in papers are also briefly discussed.
Broadly speaking studies may be experimental - the clinical trial - or observational, which includes the purely descriptional - a cross sectional study or survey - and the analytical, which itself includes both case control and cohort studies.
