Types of complications depend mainly on the location of inflammation e.g. - in patients with small bowel disease involvement, strictures are most likely to occur and in patients with perianal disease involvement, fistulizing disease is more frequently (1).
The complications of Crohn's disease are best considered as local or general; the general complications include some of the extraintestinal manifestations of Crohn's disease.
Note that more than half of patients will develop complications that require surgery (2).
