quinine

This an alkaloid derived from the bark of the cinchona tree which suppresses the asexual erythrocyte forms of malarial parasites and has a slight effect on the gametocytes of Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium malariae.

Quinine also has analgesic, antipyretic, mild oxytocic, cardiac depressant and sclerosing properties, as well as decreasing the excitability of the motor endplate.
