management of hypercyanotic attacks

Last reviewed 10/2020

Management involves:

  • placing the child with the knees against the chest
  • oxygen
  • morphine for analgesia
  • Beta-blockers may be used to reduce infundibular spasm
  • bicarbonate may be used to correct the acidosis
  • avoid agitating the child

Early surgery is indicated if there are hypercyanotic attacks.
