This condition is usually associated with rare systemic disorders:
- chronic external ophthalmoplegia
- Kearns-Sayre syndrome
- Usher's syndrome
- Lawrence-Moon-Biedl syndrome
- Refsum's syndrome
- Batten's syndrome
- abetalipoproteinaemia
Only abetalipoproteinaemia is readily treatable.
