The most common cause is arterial occlusion, usually of the superior mesenteric artery.
Classification:
- thromboembolic arterial occlusion
- mesenteric venous occlusion
- systemic vasculitis
- cardiovascular causes
- secondary to intestinal obstruction
- strangulated hernia
- intussusception - usually in children
- volvulus - usually small bowel or sigmoid colon
