toe(fracture)
Last reviewed 01/2018
This injury may be caused by a heavy object falling on the toes.
- undisplaced fractures can be supported with buddy strapping; additional support may be required e.g. crepe bandage, depending on the pain associated with the fracture.
- marked fracture displacement will require reduction.
- phalangeal dislocations can be reduced under local anaesthesia.
- it is important to treat soft tissue injuries associated with toe fractures. Wounds need to be debrided, subungual haematomas evacuated, and toenails preserved if possible. The patient's tetanus status should be checked.
