These include:

  • a potentiation of other drugs, e.g. barbiturates, alcohol, opiates, tranquilisers
  • states of agitation and excitement
  • orthostatic hypotension
  • hypertensive crisis, if the patient eats foods containing tyramine, e.g. cheeses, yeast and meat extracts
  • liver damage

Other side effects include:

  • oedema
  • sexual impotence
  • failure of orgasm
  • dry mouth
  • constipation
  • blurred vision
