side effects of antiviral nucleoside analogues
Last reviewed 01/2018
Antiviral nucleoside analogues inhibit cellular nucleotide polymerases as well as their primary targets which are the viral polymerases or reverse transcriptases. Mitochondrial DNA polymerase (pol-gamma) is particularly sensitive to inhibitions by ANA's.
The common presentations of ANA toxicity include:
- myopathy, including cardiomyopathy
- haematological disturbance
- neuropathy
