The pathological features of osteoarthritis are:
- progressive cartilage destruction
- subarticular cysts - form in areas of greatest stress
- subarticular sclerosis - trabeculae thickening around the cysts
- osteophytosis - proliferation and ossification of cartilage in peripheral, unstressed areas
- capsular fibrosis
