Trimethoprim alone is being increasingly used in certain situations because it has less side-effects than co-trimoxazole.

Cautions:

  • renal impairment
  • predisposition to folate deficiency
  • breast feeding
  • FBC in prolonged treatment

Contra-indications:

  • severe renal impairment
  • pregnancy
  • neonates

Routes of administration:

  • oral:
    • tablets
    • suspension
  • slow i.v. injection
  • i.v. infusion
