Balint's syndrome is usually caused by bilateral parieto- occipital damage.

Recognised causes of Balint's syndrome include:

  • widespread bilateral lesions of the perieto-occipital cortex:
    • stroke
    • trauma
    • tumour
    • Alzheimer's disease
    • Creutzfeld-Jacob disease

  • damage to posterior white matter:
    • progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy
    • adrenoleukodystrophy

  • rarely thalamic lesions
