management of heart failure in neonates

Treatment options include:

  • diuretics - combination loop and potassium sparing diuretic
  • nasogastric feeding with high calorie content
  • digoxin may be helpful

In the seriously unwell child the following may be needed:

  • hypotension - treat with dopamine infusion
  • apnoeas may require ventilation

Surgery is indicated by heart failure not controlled by medical management.
