appendix

The appendix is a blind-ended tube that arises from the caecum at the meeting point of the three taeniae coli, just distal to the ileo-caecal junction.

The appendix is located in the right iliac fossa near to McBurney's point - a site two-thirds of the way along a line drawn from the umbilicus to the anterior iliac spine.

In general, the appendix is mobile and is suspended by its own mesentery. The appendiceal artery runs in the free edge of the mesentery. This is effectively a free artery; having anastomotic connections only proximally.
