Causes include:
- local trauma
- haemorrhagic disease of the newborn
- necrotising enterocolitis, which may cause melaena, fresh blood per rectum, or haematemesis
- disseminated intravascular coagulation, secondary to processes such as infection, necrotising enterocolitis and birth asphyxia
- stress ulcers in sick neonates
- Meckel's diverticulum
- alloimmune thrombocytopaenia
- haemophilia in boys
More often than not, a haemolytic process will result in jaundice also.
