Causes include:
- tuberous sclerosis - tends to be subependymal, but there may be cortical tubers
- congenital toxoplasmosis, or congential cytomegalovirus; tends to be multiple, scattered, and symetrical
- tuberculosis
- craniopharyngioma
- oligodendroglioma
- meningioma
- ependymoma
- intracranial aneurysms
- AV malformations
- granulomatous disease
- hypoparathyroidism and pseudohypoparathyroidism
- calcification of the basal ganglia (common), choroid plexus, cerebellum (dentate nucleus)
- Sturge-Weber syndrome
- cysticercosis
