Causes include:

  • tuberous sclerosis - tends to be subependymal, but there may be cortical tubers
  • congenital toxoplasmosis, or congential cytomegalovirus; tends to be multiple, scattered, and symetrical
  • tuberculosis
  • craniopharyngioma
  • oligodendroglioma
  • meningioma
  • ependymoma
  • intracranial aneurysms
  • AV malformations
  • granulomatous disease
  • hypoparathyroidism and pseudohypoparathyroidism
    • calcification of the basal ganglia (common), choroid plexus, cerebellum (dentate nucleus)
  • Sturge-Weber syndrome
  • cysticercosis
