Dysphasia is an acquired deficit in the comprehension or production of language whether spoken or written.

Aphasia is a complete loss of language comprehension or production.

The main types of dysphasia are:

  • motor
  • receptive
  • conduction

Mutism is a global loss of language and is not a good localising sign.

Transcortical dysphasias are due to interuption of the connections between association cortices and the motor or sensory speech areas.
