Conservative management of acetabular fractures is becoming more popular. The indications are:
- an undisplaced fracture
- any fracture which does not involve the weight-bearing superomedial portion of the acetabulum
- fractures in the elderly where closed reduction is possible
- a patient with medical contraindications to surgery
The regime includes:
- longitudinal traction, with lateral traction if required, for 6-8 weeks
- hip movement and exercises throughout
- mobilisation on crutches with minimal weight bearing for 6 weeks
