conservative treatment

Last reviewed 01/2018

Conservative management of acetabular fractures is becoming more popular. The indications are:

  • an undisplaced fracture
  • any fracture which does not involve the weight-bearing superomedial portion of the acetabulum
  • fractures in the elderly where closed reduction is possible
  • a patient with medical contraindications to surgery

The regime includes:

  • longitudinal traction, with lateral traction if required, for 6-8 weeks
  • hip movement and exercises throughout
  • mobilisation on crutches with minimal weight bearing for 6 weeks
