aspirin in children

Last reviewed 01/2018

Aspirin is almost always contraindicated in children under 12 years because of the risk of Reye's syndrome. However, there are some exceptions where it may be used with caution including:

  • Kawasaki disease, where it may alter disease progression and outcome
  • juvenile chronic arthritis, where it has an important role in pain managment
  • rarely it may be used in the treatment of rheumatic fever
