major histocompatibility antigen class I

MHC class I has alleles at the A, B, C loci on chromosome 6.
Features are as follows:
- two chain structure; an alpha and beta chain
- expressed on all nucleated cells
- mainly concerned with the recognition of viral antigens by cytotoxic T cells
