Medical therapy:

  • treatment options used include high dose intravenous therapy with antifungals e.g. amphotericin. However there has only been limited success with antifungal therapy. Also the nephrotoxic potential of amphotericin means that biochemistry must be monitored closely
  • in certain circumstances e.g. a patient suffering massive haemoptysis, then local instillation of amphotericin paste (under CT guidance) may be employed

If haemoptysis is severe then treatment is achieved via surgical removal, though mortality is high. Surgical treatment may be necessary if there is a failure of medical management.
