When managing diabetes there are two aims:
- to prevent hypo- and hyperglycaemia and maintain a level of glycaemic control appropriate to the patients age, duration of disease, existing complications, compliance, intelligence and lifestyle on a day to day basis
- to prevent / treat as necessary the longterm micro and macrovascular complications of diabetes
The treatment of IDDM (type I) and NIDDM (type II) diabetes may involve one or more of:
- dietary measures
- therapy with oral hypoglycaemic agents
- insulin therapy
monitoring control in diabetes
management of type I diabetes (IDDM)
pragmatic algorithm for the management of glycaemic (glucose) control in type 2 diabetes
detailed management options in type II diabetes (NIDDM)
overall care of the diabetic population
diabetes mellitus (anaesthesia and surgery)
